The real thing, not a likeness
Most keepsakes are a likeness. These two are not — a fingerprint is the exact ridges of their own finger, handwriting the exact motion of their hand. Kept to the line, never redrawn.
A fingerprint, kept to the ridge
A print lifted at the funeral home goes onto a lighter, a keyring, or a piece of slate, at the size it was taken. Any finger works — whichever has the clearest ridges, or the one that means the most; couples often choose a loved one’s ring finger. We sharpen what is faint without inventing ridges that were never there, and tell you honestly before you pay if a print is too far gone.
Handwriting, in their own hand
A recipe card, the last line of a letter, a signature — cut from the original note, at the size it was written, with every underline and crossing-out. A line on the front, the name it was signed with on the back.
The recipe card
People send us recipe cards more than anything else — a grandmother's, usually, in her own hand, and usually the only copy. Photograph it flat in daylight or scan it; we cut it into a walnut serving board that goes back on the table, and send the original nowhere.
